Germany and Vanuatu: Bilateral relations

07.03.2025 - Article

Vanuatu and Germany enjoy amicable political relations. Diplomatic contacts are maintained via the German Embassy in Canberra. At local level, Germany is represented by an honorary consul in Port Vila. In autumn 2023, State Secretary and Special Envoy for International Climate Action Jennifer Morgan visited Vanuatu.

Germany supports Vanuatu’s development through its International Climate Initiative (IKI) and through its contributions to the Neighbourhood, Development and International Cooperation Instrument (NDICI) of the European Union. Furthermore, Germany is active in Vanuatu through projects in the spheres of climate action, biodiversity, cultural exchange and empowering women. In the wake of the 2023 cyclones, Germany supported a local assistance project to provide clean drinking water.

Vanuatu is also closely involved in German cooperation on climate policy with the countries of the South Pacific region. Jotham Napat, then Foreign Minister of Vanuatu, visited Germany in 2023.

The scale of bilateral economic relations with Germany is modest. According to Federal Statistical Office figures, Germany exported goods worth 806,000 euro to Vanuatu in 2024 and imported goods worth 3000 euro from the country.
