Germany and Vanuatu: Bilateral relations

Vanuatu and Germany enjoy amicable political relations. Diplomatic contacts are maintained via the German Embassy in Canberra and there is a German Honorary Consul is in Port Vila. State Secretary and Special Envoy for International Climate Action Jennifer Morgan visited Vanuatu in 2023.

Germany supports development in Vanuatu via its contributions to the EU’s “Neighbourhood, Development and International Cooperation Instrument” (NDICI) (until 2021 “European Development Fund” (EDF)). The EU is the fourth-largest donor of development aid in the region, after Australia, China and New Zealand. Vanuatu is also closely involved in German cooperation on climate policy with the countries of the South Pacific region. The country sent a delegation led by then prime minister Charlot Salwai Tabimasmas to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 23) held in Bonn in November 2017.

Bilateral economic relations with Germany are limited. According to Federal Statistical Office figures, Germany exported goods worth 617.000 euro to Vanuatu in 2023 and imports added up to 1000 euro (source: DESTATIS).
