The German Embassy Canberra is seeking a Assistant Desk Officer / Adviser (m/f/d) in the areas of Politics and Protocol - full time position (38 hours per week) - starting in March 2025.

The main job tasks of this position are:
• Supporting the work of the Embassy's Policy Unit with a focus on Pacific Island States (Papua Newguinea, Vanuatu, Nauru, Solomon Islands)
• Bilateral and multilateral cooperation projects, climate policy and humanitarian aid
• Supporting the preparation and organization of delegation trips from Germany and trips of the Ambassador and Deputy
• Protocol tasks
• Preparation of contributions for speeches and reports on political topics
• Forwarding communications from the German government to the Australian government and the governments of the Pacific island states
• Processing travel and safety advisories as well as citizen inquiries
Qualifications and skills required for this position:
• Completed German or Australian university degree, preferably with a focus on political or regional sciences
• If possible, professional experience in administrative, academic and/or business areas
• good knowledge of German and English (oral and written) • Communication and teamwork skills
• Willingness to work and good organizational skills
• IT knowledge of common office applications • accommodating demeanor in an intercultural environment
The position is initially limited to 12 months with a subsequent possibility of extension.
The work contract is based on local law and will be as per the standard contract terms of the German missions in Australia. The salary is based on the salary scheme for locally employed staff of the German missions in Australia. It is comparable to level 5-1 in the APS.
Candidates who are not Australian citizens must already have a valid Australian visa with work permit, sponsorship by the Embassy is not possible.

After a successful selection process, a medical examination by the Embassy’s cooperating physician and the Health Division of the Federal Foreign Office is required as proof of health suitability prior to employment.
In addition, willingness to undergo a security clearance is a prerequisite for employment. Your cooperation will be expected.
