What to do in case of theft?
If your passport, documents, cash, or other valuables are stolen, contact the nearest police station immediately, report the theft, and obtain a copy of the police report. If this is not possible, they must at least provide you with the report/case number. Insurance companies generally require a police report before they can process a claim.
Block stolen debit/credit cards by calling +49 30 4050 4050.
Reverse charge calls to Germany can be made from any public phone booth by calling 0800 89 00 49; the person called is responsible for any charges.
How do I get money?
In case of loss of cash or bank/credit cards, or other financial difficulties, a money transfer to Australia is possible within minutes using a transfer system like Western Union. Another alternative is MoneyGram.
Always ask for the transfer number (MTCN) – this makes the payout easier. You can check if the amount has been received by calling the toll-free number 0800-833 833. Payouts are only made upon presentation of identification. If you don't have identification, it's advisable to designate a trusted third party (perhaps a travel companion) as the recipient, with whom you can collect the money.
In Germany, family or friends can deposit money with Western Union 24/7 via credit card online, bank transfer from a bank account (e.g., via online banking), or at any branch of Deutsche Postbank AG or ReiseBank AG during their respective opening hours. The sender covers the money transfer fees. Please note that all information regarding the payer and recipient must match the information on the identification documents.
Some financial institutions offer an emergency cash transfer or emergency cash withdrawal service in case of card loss. You should inquire about this service with your bank or credit card provider before your trip. Alternatively, the companies can provide information if you have your cards blocked.
Please understand that German missions abroad cannot cover the costs of your continued stay or onward travel.
How do I get a new travel document?
To return to Germany, you can be issued a “Travel Permit in Lieu of Passport” (“RAP”). It is only valid for direct return to Germany and is valid for a maximum of one month.
If you can provide certified photocopies of your lost identification documents, an immediate issuance of the Travel Permit in Lieu of Passport is possible. Without such a copy, the relevant German citizens' registration office must be contacted for identity verification. In case of loss or theft of your identification document, a police report must be presented.
Travel Permits in Lieu of Passport are generally issued during opening hours or by appointment.
In emergencies, the Consulate General in Sydney or the Embassy in Canberra can issue a Travel Permit in Lieu of Passport outside of regular business hours and on weekends, provided the necessary documents are available. Please note that your presence in Sydney or Canberra is mandatory for this.
Please be aware that in most cases, proof of identity from Germany will need to be requested. To contact the relevant authorities, we strongly advise you to contact them as soon as possible!
Please note that for the issuance of a travel document for minor applicants, both parents must give their consent. If only one parent has custody, additional proof is required (e.g., a custody order, death certificate of the other parent).
