Temporary Passport
General Information
Since issuing biometric passports at the Federal Printing Office in Berlin can take several weeks, in proven emergencies, the German Embassy in Canberra and the Consulate General in Sydney can issue a temporary passport with a short-term validity of up to one year in addition to the biometric passport application. The temporary passport becomes invalid upon issuance of the new biometric passport.
Passport applications must be submitted in person and by appointment.
Please note that some countries do not accept the temporary passport for entry and transit, or only accept it under certain conditions. Please check with your airline and a embassy or consulate of your destination country in Australia (for example, the Indonesian Consulate General in Sydney) in advance.
Please be advised that only complete passport applications can be accepted. Therefore, you should expect that incomplete applications will require a new appointment.
Required Documents
The following documents are required for your application:
(ORIGINAL documents and ONE COPY EACH, including your most recent passport and proof of residence)
- Application form (completed in block capitals; forms below)
- Birth certificate with parents' details (if not in German or English: with a translation into German or English)
- For married applicants: Marriage certificate/extract from the marriage register showing the married name, if available (if not in German or English: with a translation into German or English)
- Certificate of name change, if applicable
- German naturalization certificate, if applicable
- For naturalization abroad: Foreign naturalization certificate and certificate authorizing the retention of German citizenship (“Beibehaltungsgenehmigung”)
- If applicable: Proof of other citizenships and their acquisition
- If you do not hold Australian citizenship: A current VEVO (no more than two weeks old)
Visa Entitlement Verification Online - Deregistration certificate from Germany (only required if your last German passport still lists a German address)
- Current proof of address in Australia (e.g., Australian driver's license; utility bill; rental agreement)
- Two recent, biometric passport photos
- A self-addressed, stamped, waterproof envelope from Australia Post (preferably Express Post Platinum, Express Post with Signature, or Parcel Post with Signature), unless the passport is being collected directly from the Consulate General in Sydney or the Embassy in Canberra. Paper envelopes of any kind are unsuitable for passport mailings due to the risk of damage during transit. Please note that German diplomatic missions abroad assume no liability for loss or damage during mailing or courier service delivery.
